Conservadores en el ayuntamiento cienfueguero. Debates y acuerdos: un acercamiento a su gestión de gobierno entre 1878 y 1898

Resumen

La historiografía cubana continúa incluyendo entre sus producciones más recientes los debates sobre los procesos políticos del siglo XIX. El pensamiento burgués de esta etapa, representado por proyectos integristas y reformistas, el primero reacio a los cambios del status quo colonial, mientras el segundo con ansias de autonomía pacifista; se colocaron en múltiples ocasiones en espacios de poder como los ayuntamientos. Las disputas por acceder a los cargos en provincias y términos municipales fueron reflejadas y divulgadas por la prensa, que también socializaba los intereses clasistas que se movían detrás del telón político. En regiones históricas como Cienfuegos, entre los años 1878 y 1898, el integrismo quedó representado en las elecciones por el Partido Unión Constitucional. El objetivo del trabajo se orienta a explicar la permanencia de los conservadores en el gobierno local, sumándole a ello los resultados obtenidos a partir de los debates y los acuerdos tomados por sus miembros en esta etapa.

ABSTRACT

Cuban historiography continues to include among its most recent productions the debates on the political processes of the 19th century. The bourgeois thought of this period, represented by conservative and reformist projects, the first to be reluctant to the changes of the colonial status quo, while the latter with a yearning for pacifist autonomy were placed on multiple occasions in power spaces such as town halls. Disputes over access to office in provinces and municipalities were reflected and disseminated by the press, which also socialized the class interests that moved behind the political backdrop. In historical regions as Cienfuegos, between 1878 and 1898, conservatism was represented in the elections of the Constitutional Union Party. The objective of this paper is to explain conservatism continuance in the local government, as well as the results obtained from the debates and the agreements reached by its members in this period.
