Study of obituaries dedicated to Cubans in journalistic texts by José Martí
Abstract
In the journalistic texts written by José Martí there are many obituaries dedicated to Cubans, which have not yet been considered as a specific object of study, but as part of the research approaches to Marti's journalistic portraits, both autonomous and incidental. The present investigation had as the overall aim to characterize Marti's portrait style present in the incidental obituaries of Cubans that José Martí wrote in his journalism. For this purpose, general research methods such as analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and historical-logical ones were used, and textual analysis was applied as the main specific method. In addition, the analysis of documents and the bibliographic and documentary review were used to state the background, the theoretical basis, and for the selection of the sample, which was made up of thirteen incidental obituaries of Cubans in Marti's journalism. The analyzed obituaries were published in the Revista Universal of Mexico in 1875 and in Patria between 1892 and 1894. With this research it is intended to solve the emptiness earlier identified in this area of Marti's studies and as a result it is possible to count on the characterization and definition of Marti's incidental obituaries, as well as with an extension of those studies that previously have approached the subject.
