Student ideologies and perceptions about globalization in Ecuador
Abstract
This study sought to understand how students’ beliefs and ideologies influence their views on globalization, focusing on a group of students at the Universidad Regional Autónoma de Los Andes. To do so, surveys and interviews were used. 37 students were asked to complete a questionnaire about their views on globalization, and 12 of them were interviewed to gain further insight into their experiences. The results showed that, in general, students viewed the economic and cultural benefits of globalization favorably. However, many also expressed concern about the possible loss of their cultural identities and the increase in economic inequalities. Through the interviews, it was discovered that these perceptions were not simple; they were greatly influenced by the age and gender of the students. Younger students tended to be more optimistic about globalization, while women expressed greater concerns about how this phenomenon could affect their cultural traditions. This leads to the conclusion that opinions on globalization are deeply shaped by individual experiences and demographic characteristics.
