From Overseas Chinese Literature to Avant-Garde Narratives: The Translation and Dissemination of Chinese Literature in Spain

Abstract

Commercial relations between China and Spain began in the sixteenth century; however, literary exchanges between the two countries did not emerge until the twentieth century. Within this cultural interaction, narrative fiction—particularly the novel—has become the most prominent literary genre, serving as an important medium for the transmission of cultural values, ideas, and social experience. From Mingxin Baojian to Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, the development of the translation and dissemination of Chinese literature, including overseas Chinese literature and modern and contemporary Chinese fiction, reflects the profound social transformations experienced by both countries during the twentieth century. This article aims to analyze the introduction and translation of overseas Chinese literature and modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain, as well as their main characteristics of development. By examining these processes, the study seeks to identify the key factors that influence literary translation and dissemination in the Spanish context.
