Martí: from friendship to spirit in the musical work of the Tomás-Aguado family
Abstract
The musical work of the Tomas Aguado family has been marked by a Martian spirit impregnated from the beginning by a beautiful friendship. Both affinities not only began with the conquest and defense of the same cause, that of the patriotic and independence ideal, but also with the symbolism that the work of this Cuban intellectual provoked in the 19th century. The bond and gratitude professed by Jose Martí during his emigration to Guillermo Tomas and Ana Aguado marked the subsequent artistic projection of both. In Guillermo´s case, works such as the Hymn dedicated to Jose de la Luz y Caballero or his virtues demonstrated by the creation of the first music school for poor children in Havana are actions where a notable Martian presence was evident. Ana, however, was Marti´s inspiration during his emigration, his voice was the most sublime consolation for all the patriots of New York. These are some of the notes that denote the significance and presence of Marti in the work and life of these musicians who, of these musicians who above all were profoundly revolutionary. This last idea sums up the objective of this research.
