Refereeing in Youth Football in Campeche, Mexico: Challenges and Formative Perspectives
Abstract
Refereeing in youth football is a key element for both the development of the game and the education of young players. Beyond enforcing the rules, referees take on a pedagogical and social role that shapes value formation and conflict resolution. Nevertheless, scientific research on this subject is limited, particularly in local contexts such as Campeche, Mexico. Objective: To critically analyze the scientific production on refereeing in youth football, with emphasis on the context of Campeche, Mexico. Methods: A documentary review of 11 studies from academic databases and specialized sources was conducted, assessing contributions, gaps, and issues related to refereeing in formative stages. Results: The literature shows limited representation of the topic; however, the reviewed studies highlight the pedagogical and social role of referees as educators. Limitations were identified in young referees’ training, lack of context-specific programs, and local challenges regarding professionalization and social recognition in Campeche. Conclusions: Refereeing in youth football remains an underexplored yet relevant field that requires further research and the development of continuous training strategies to strengthen refereeing practice in specific contexts.
