María Teresa Vera: musical symbol of Cuba on her 130th birthday
Abstract
This article aims to characterize the main features of the musical work of Cuban singer, composer, and guitarist María Teresa Vera on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of her birth in 2025. Her work is essential to the history of Cuban trova song and a paradigm of the excellence of traditional Cuban song, the so-called old trova. She was one of the few female singers of her time. The habanera Veinte Años, of all his compositions, is evidently the most popular and widespread, so much so that it has survived to this day with the same resonance with which it was born in 1935. From these enclaves, we recognize this personality, in particular, his work as part of the panorama and contemporary musical history in Cuba.
