Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant increase in infections, causing various squeal and aggravation by directly attacking the respiratory system. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of breathing exercises in improving the physical condition of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the city of Cuito, Bié province, Angola. Considering the effectiveness of physiotherapy methods in post-COVID-19 rehabilitation, techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, bronchial hygiene, and aerobic exercises were developed, showing significant benefits in the functional recovery of convalescents. However, the response to treatment may vary depending on individual factors, comorbidities, and in pregnant women. The research adopted a quantitative approach, with a quasi-experimental line, applied to 236 participants who completed a breathing exercise program for 8 weeks. Parameters such as lung capacity, respiratory muscle strength, and health-related quality of life were assessed before and after the exercises. The results indicated significant improvements in the participants' lung capacity and respiratory muscle strength. A reduction in dyspnea symptoms and a significant increase in health-related quality of life were observed. It is concluded that the implementation of breathing exercises is effective in the rehabilitation of post-COVID-19 patients, contributing to functional recovery and improving the participants' quality of life. The inclusion of breathing exercises in pulmonary rehabilitation protocols in the Bié region of Angola is recommended.
